Bengaluru for Chennai during the Chennai floods, 24/7 control room was ready to HELP
The office of the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB) in Bangalore’s Bannerghatta Road was busy with lots of activities by volunteers trying to help those affected by the floods in Chennai, The office was temporarily converted into a control room following floods in Chennai that was open 24×7.
With thousands in Bangalore trying desperately to reach those stranded in Chennai, the officials were using the existing infrastructure to carry out relief work.
Within six hours of functioning Chennai flood control room. It received around 9000 calls in 6 hours, The group used Facebook to spread news about their efforts and the result it was tremendous, Seeing the FB post, many in Bangalore volunteered and around 30 volunteers coming in 3 shifts .
The initiative was supported by GC Chandrshekar, chairman of KUWSDB, it has also received support from senior civil servants who are volunteering along with Bangalore residents.
The control room has 30 lines voice call, 2 whatsapp numbers, fax, photocopying machines, plotter, printers, 30 computers, 15 mobile phone lines, and one SMS gateway. It also has HAM (amateur radio) connectivity.
The team at the control room helps in coordination between different rescue teams, directing them to those who are stranded. They were also focusing on connecting the donors to those offering relief.
The efforts of the team played off and Google search engine selected it as the first step communication for those looking for information on Chennai floods.
